Passionate immersive travelers surf cardboard signs through European cities: ExperienceLess and Trourists

exp.jpgCreated for those “who travel to live destinations, not visit them,” ExperienceLess is the collaborative effort of a loose group of “trourists” (I know, say it 3 times fast) who, lacking “real experiences at an unfamiliar destination,” sit out with cardboard signs inviting strangers to invite them into their city for the night. To me, their postmodern couchsurfing and shouting about “the difference between visiting a city and living it,”

“HELP!!! I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOUR MUSEUMS AND I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOUR STATUES. AND, ABOVE ALL, I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOUR CITY. I  WANT TO LIVE IT.”

invites a rehash of the tired, old “traveler vs. tourist” debate (I’ve always agreed with Kelsey Timmerman that, ultimately, we’re ALL tourons, get over it). Still, I enjoy watching the videos and reading the stories that these trourists manage to squeeze out of their exploits, like in Barcelona:

“But the master plan was suggested by Guillen and Laura, who informed us that that very night Monjtuic (known as the ‘the magic mountain’ of Barcelona) would be experiencing its most special night of the year…. Things kicked off at Laura’s house, where assorted mates joined in to prepare potato omelets to savor later that evening. Rumba concerts, Brazilian rhythms and Capoheira gym-dance exhibitions were among the night’s entertainment fare”

As long as they find the experiences they are seeking, I’m all for it. Suerte, muchachos.

I would need to have an abundance of time in a place to spend that kind of time sitting around with a sign, hoping that a local will notice me and want to show me around.

I think it’s an interesting idea, especially that you may wind up following around a random stranger, however I’d meet up with friends of friends, or someone on Couchsurfing who is willing to go out for coffee (and whose profile I can read to see if we have common interests), or just email a blogger located in that city and see if we can meet up for lunch.

I think this will quickly devolve into taxi drivers taking these kids to markets where they can get a commission.

Hey, I just want to start by saying that I love your blog. I was inspired by your post so I wrote one of my own, although its more an inspiration of a post within a post within a post.

Anyway I would love to know your thoughts. I just started a kind of long-term travel blog and I am dying for some feedback.
Hope you get a chance to read it but if you don’t thanks for the great writing!

As a true touron I don’t need a card board sign. I just walk around with a dumb look on my face until someone pities me and takes me into their homes. That way you don’t need markers or cardboard.
