Fortune Cookie Origins Traced to … Japan

I have a particular interest in fortune cookies, ever since I drew YOU WILL SOON BE CROSSING THE GREAT WATERS, before our extended honeymoon and, two years later, decided on these words for the title of my next book. So it was interesting to find this New York Times article, “Solving a Riddle Wrapped in a Mystery Inside a Cookie.” Three billion fortune cookies are produced each year (mostly in the U.S.) and distributed around the world, but “there is one place where fortune cookies are conspicuously absent: China.”

I once got a fortune cookie message that read, “You will be a big lottery winner.” I immediately went out an bought a ticket. Didn’t happen. No winning ticket. No fortune. Glad yours turned out better.
