Best Souvenir Ever: Om Mani Padme Hum

necklace1.jpgIn order to counterbalance the previous post about a festering botfly infestation, I decided to present a kinder, gentler item to bring home. Om Mani Padme Hum is an ancient Tibetan mantra which, when uttered out loud or thought silently, invokes “the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion,” a.k.a. the Dalai Lama himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald…striking. Om Mani Padme Hum. That’s what is written on Tay’s necklace, which contains a scroll of more mantras inside (the gift that keeps on giving). I believe she acquired this piece in Darjeeling.
