The Tranquilo Traveler
The Tranquilo Traveler is a celebration of voluntourism, slow travel, and other interesting ways to see the world. Travel writer and award- winning Moon Handbooks author Joshua Berman created The Tranquilo Travel as a resource for world trippers and international volunteers, a window to the author’s travels in Nicaragua, Belize, and beyond, and an update of his books and articles.
Portrait of my Workspace

I took this photo to serve as the “before shot” in a time-lapse movie of me cleaning my room. I didn’t think to post it until I saw an image of Al Gore’s cluttered workspace and thought, why not pay tribute to my own mess? The hanging pictures are Grandpa Dick and the Dalai Lama. I got the desk for fifty bucks on craigslist, the all-in-one printer at Staple’s, and the tired old G4 in Chiang Mai (remember that happy ending?). A quiver of my books, cold cup of that morning’s coffee, and Vonnegut quote taped to the wall complete the scene. Temple of the soul, word factory, or pile of wires and crap? You make the call.

Does Temple of the Crap work?
Grandpa Dick would be very proud to know that he’s in the picture frame while the Dalai Lama is just pinned to the wall.
i’m going to go with word factory. is that a mac is see there? i’m about to buy a laptop myself and wondering which is the best to get.
Dude, that would be my “after” photo. That office looks way too tidy for a travel writer with more than one project in the hopper. Don’t feel bad–that looks quite organized to me. There’s an interesting book out, by the way, called The Perfect Mess. It’s theory is that cluttered work spaces usually mean more creative and productive people in the chair. The random connections of what’s at hand and the more frequent “a-ha” moments create more breakthroughs.

I see the writer’s telltale (and familiar) pile of stuff on the floor, right at the foot of the fifty-buck desk. Whenever I manage to clear mine away, the office looks bare.
