From American Jewish World Service: “Just over a year ago, thousands of AJWS supporters and other concerned citizens rallied in Washington, D.C. and cities around the country, demanding that President Bush act to end the genocide in Darfur. Last month, activists in over 35 countries around the world spoke out to demand protection for the people of Darfur.

Although the movement to end the genocide is growing, we are also marking a sad anniversary: it has been one year since the signing of the Darfur Peace Agreement, a pact that instead of creating peace has caused a host of new problems on the ground.

Today, the Sudanese government is obstructing efforts to deploy a joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force to the region.

As president of the U.N. Security Council this month, the U.S. has a new opportunity to increase multilateral pressure on Sudan to accept the deployment of a robust peacekeeping force.

Please urge President Bush and Ambassador Khalilzad, U.S. Representative to the U.N., to show Khartoum that there is international resolve to end the genocide. Send your message today.

Thank you for speaking out and taking action.

Sincerely,
AJWS Action Team

P.S. AJWS would like to acknowledge the work of John Prendergast (International Crisis Group, ENOUGH) and Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), who are working tirelessly to end the genocide in Darfur. They have recently published a book, “Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond,” which we encourage you to consult for additional ways to take action for the people of Darfur.”
