The Tranquilo Traveler
The Tranquilo Traveler is a celebration of voluntourism, slow travel, and other interesting ways to see the world. Travel writer and award- winning Moon Handbooks author Joshua Berman created The Tranquilo Travel as a resource for world trippers and international volunteers, a window to the author’s travels in Nicaragua, Belize, and beyond, and an update of his books and articles.
Global Justice on the Eight Nights of Hanukkah
I thought I would share this link to social justice–themed Hanukkah candle blessings from American Jewish World Service, the organization with which I have traveled a great deal over the past five years — to El Salvador, Honduras, Israel, India, Sri Lanka, and Ghana. This March, I’ll be leading trips with AJWS in Mexico and Nicaragua (my Transitions Abroad article about AJWS is still on newsstands). The link above offers this reading on the first night of Hanukkah: “May our gratitude for our many gifts translate into a commitment to tikkun olam – repairing the world – so that all may benefit from the gifts we enjoy.” Last night’s candle was for women’s empowerment, tonight is to end the genocide in Darfur, and tomorrow, the last night: hope and peace.

If you want to do something now about the genocide in Darfur, visit The Darfur Wall Project at http://darfurwall.org. The project gives everyone a way to join together to make an impact.
The Wall consists of 400,000 numbers representing the victims of the violence.
You can help light the entire wall by donating one dollar to light one number representing a person who has perished.
The website provides other suggestions for opposing the genocide.
All proceeds, 100 percent, go for humanitarian assistance. Admin costs, which are kept to a minimum, are paid out of the pockets of the folks running the site.
Please visit now. We must all do what we can, and we must do it now!
