New Year and New Plans

As several of you have observed, there has been a recent addition to our itinerary. I’m speaking of the new countries listed under “Africa” in the “categories” section to your right. As my friend, Khalid (a.k.a. “Manzoor,” from our almost-ill-fated bus trip in Pakistan last summer), you cannot have a proper trip around the world without including Africa. My wife, Tay, who spent nearly three life-changing years in The Gambia, agrees.

I’m an eager first-timer, excited for a glimpse.

We’ve been planning this re-route for a few months, but it wasn’t until the other day that we actually bought plane tickets. Nothing like the commitment of one’s cold, hard cash to make something feel real.

And so, in the middle of the night of May 2, we will boad an Emirates Airlines flight to Dar es Salaam. Our tentative Tanzania itinerary includes Zanzibar, Mt. Kilimanjaro (or Meru, can’t decide), the Ngorongoro Crater, and a Serengeti Safari. After that, we make our way to Akkra, Ghana, where we’ll be working with Planned Parenthood for two months.

After that, a brief jaunt through Senegal and Tay’s old stomping grounds.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka prepares to go hog wild for the combined Tamil and Sinhala New Years this week. We’ll be laying low on our ocean-front balcony, Hikkaduwa-style.
