The Tranquilo Traveler

The Tranquilo Traveler is a celebration of voluntourism, slow travel, and other interesting ways to see the world. Travel writer and award- winning Moon Handbooks author Joshua Berman created The Tranquilo Travel as a resource for world trippers and international volunteers, a window to the author’s travels in Nicaragua, Belize, and beyond, and an update of his books and articles.

Yes, compañeros! The freshly updated Moon Handbooks Nicaragua—the book I wrote with Randy Wood after completing our Peace Corps service in “The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes”—is on shelves now!

Randy and I wrote the book we wish we’d had when we first reported for duty in 1998, when there were no guidebooks, and tourism was still finding its feet. This second edition of Moon Handbooks Nicaragua is the result of the authors’ combined seven years’ experience living, working, traveling, (and marrying into) Nicaragua. The new book features suggested routes, updated practical info, new photos, and, as always, a guide to volunteering and studying Spanish in each region. Big-up to our Editor, Chris Jones, and to the whole crew at Avalon Travel Publishing.

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and among the safest, cheapest, most colorful, geographically diverse, and increasingly popular destinations in the region. Nicaragua is also one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere, its tourism industry continues to develop, real estate prices are all over the place, and the politicians keep things as interesting as ever. Still, the country accommodates all types of visitors, from the most curious and unrushed backpackers to luxury-seeking vacationers to an interesting assortment of expats from around the world.

Buy the book, visit the country, speak with the people, and you’ll see what I mean.
