O, The Places We’ll Go

It was not without some anxiety that we signed the money transfer this morning and watched a relatively large chunk of our wedding cash disappear over the Rockies to our travel agent in San Francisco (round-the-world specialists, airtreks.com).

In the next few weeks before departure, paper plane tickets will arrive in the mail, bearing the following airport and city names:

NEWARK NJ
CHARLES DE GAU, PARIS
DUBAI, EMIRATES
ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN
INDIRA GANDHI, DELHI
BANGKOK INTL
SINGAPORE
DENPASAR BALI
SYDNEY AU
AUCKLAND
LOS ANGELES CA
SAN FRANCIS CA
JFK, NY

Some thoughts on travelling in India based on three weeks spent in Chennai, Kerela, Dheli, Varanasi, Ellora, Mumbai, and points between. Read stories and see drawings from our trip.

*Every price is negotiable. Even if there’s a tag. Even exchange rates.

*The most important thing when getting to a new town is finding someone you can trust - that will recommend a hotel without getting a kickback (which raises your rates) and that will let you know the local auto-rickshaw rates.

*Auto-rickshaws rock - they’re usually faster rides than cars in a city.

*Keep in mind: India is going through massive change. It is a third world country that is a world leader in technology.

*The Indian music video channels rock.

*Don’t trust the fruit cup on flights within India - it’s the only thing that got us sick.

*Expect train delays. Indians usually bring at least a day’s worth of food - the food they sell on the train ain’t that good. We had several long delays with very friendly berthmates who stuffed us with some delicious homemade snacks.

*Many Indians don’t like spicy food. Touristy restaurants (especially one place in Agra) assume that Americans don’t like spice or any flavor.

*They play cricket in any semi-open space.

*As they say in Varanasi - “India is like LSD. Sometimes it’s a good trip, sometimes it’s a bad trip, but it’s always a trip.”

Peace.
